A Letter to LifeScan Customers

OneTouch® Basic® / Basic® Plus Meter Users:

If you use a OneTouch® Basic® / Basic® Plus Blood Glucose Monitoring System that is set to display menus and messages in Greek, LifeScan wants you to be aware of translation errors in two of the display messages.

With the first translation error, a blood glucose test result of 60 mg/dL or below should display the blood glucose test result and the message “DANGER CALL DR” in all languages. However, this message was incorrectly translated in Greek to display the blood glucose test result and the message “HIGH CALL DOCTOR”. The actual glucose reading is correct and, for most patients, indicates a low blood glucose condition that may need special attention. If you receive this message, you should call your doctor and report the numeric blood glucose result. Do not be confused by the display message that incorrectly suggests a high reading.

The second translation error that occurs in the Greek language mode happens during both the blood glucose testing procedure and the control solution testing procedure. The error occurs when the meter should display the message “WAIT” right after a test strip is inserted and just before the message “APPLY SAMPLE” is displayed. However, the “WAIT” message was incorrectly translated in Greek to display the message “NOW.” When receiving the incorrect “NOW” display message, you should not be confused but should wait until you see the message “APPLY SAMPLE” before applying either a blood sample or control solution to the test strip. If the blood sample or control solution is applied before the message “APPLY SAMPLE” is displayed, the meter will not produce a test result but will instead display the message “ERROR 1,” and you will have to test again with a new test strip.

Because of the potential for confusion, LifeScan is currently correcting these translation errors and will replace any OneTouch Basic / Basic Plus Meter used in the Greek language mode free of charge. If you use a OneTouch Basic / Basic Plus Meter in the Greek language mode, and would like to receive a replacement meter, please call the Customer Sevice Dep.of LifeScan Hellas at 210-6875770 in Athens and at 2310-392301 in Thessaloniki or at the Complaint Line at 800 11 78 888 to be placed on a waiting list. A replacement Meter will be shipped to you when it becomes available.

In the meantime, you should continue to use your OneTouch Basic / Basic Plus Meter with confidence for both blood glucose and control solution testing. You should rely on the numeric test results produced by the meter, and make sure to wait during testing to apply blood samples and control solution to the test strip until instructed by the meter to do so. These translation errors occur only when the meter is set to display messages in Greek and do not occur when display messages are in English. The errors have no impact on the performance of the OneTouch Basic / Basic PlusMeter or the accuracy of its test results.

If you have any questions or concerns about this issue, please contact the Customer Sevice Dep. of LifeScan Hellas at 210-6875770 in Athens and at 2310-392301 in Thessaloniki or at the Complaint Line at 800 11 78 888
